Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing our everyday lives and redefining the way we work. Likewise, as we stand on the brink of this new era, it’s crucial to grasp how AI might reshape different sectors. Here we take a comprehensive look at a ranking of U.S. industries, illustrating their potential for AI automation and the future of work.

Goldman Sachs carried out a thorough study where they scrutinized more than 900 U.S. jobs. They used a detailed database that describes the tasks tied to each job. After identifying the tasks that AI could potentially automate, they examined the percentage of workers in each industry who were engaged in those jobs. Here are the U.S. industries with the highest potential for automation, according to Visual Capitalist

Infographic explaining the highest ai automation potential per industry in the United States. Office and administrative support ranks highest with 46%, and industries that are more manual labor-intensive have a potential of less than 5%.

AI Automation Potential by Industry

The study suggests that office and administrative support jobs will likely be the most affected by AI. Tasks such as data entry, scheduling meetings, and document management could be automated with the help of virtual assistants.

The legal industry is the second most likely to be impacted, with AI potentially automating contract analysis and even predicting court case outcomes.

Interestingly, industries relying on manual labor, like construction, are less likely to be affected.

AI’s impact on jobs depends on how fast it improves and how quickly businesses start using it. It won’t affect all countries at the same rate. Some countries are more optimistic about AI than others.

Goldman Sachs suggests that:

“AI could impact up to 300 million jobs worldwide and possibly increase GDP by 7% (roughly $7 trillion) under the most aggressive scenario”

The Future with AI

To conclude, AI is set to reshape many industries. This doesn’t just mean automating tasks, but also redefining our roles within these industries. Companies that embrace this change could unlock unimaginable performance and service levels.

AI is here, and the future will belong to those ready for the journey. Industries most open to disruption also have the most to gain.

Understanding which industries are most exposed to this change is key in preparing for a future where AI is central. Clearly, the advent of AI presents both challenges and opportunities that we’ll need to handle with care and foresight.
